Budesonide
Budesonide is a potent glucocorticoid receptor agonist featuring a high affinity for internal cellular steroid receptors and a high rate of first-pass hepatic metabolism. It functions by diffusing across target cell membranes to bind and activate glucocorticoid receptors in the cytoplasm. Once activated, this complex moves into the nucleus to turn off the transcription of genes responsible for producing pro-inflammatory cytokines, chemokines, and adhesion molecules, while turning on anti-inflammatory protein synthesis. When delivered to the lungs or the gastrointestinal tract, its unique lipophilic chemical structure enables it to dissolve deeply into local tissue walls, resulting in a high local anti-inflammatory effect that reduces mucosal swelling, decreases thick mucus secretion, and calms hypersensitive airway walls with minimal systemic side effects.
