Canagliflozin
Canagliflozin is an orally active SGLT2 inhibitor that features a unique thiophene ring structure. While its primary function is to block SGLT2 in the kidneys to induce glucuresis, at high local concentrations in the gut it also provides transient inhibition of the intestinal SGLT1 transporter. This dual action slightly delays glucose absorption in the gastrointestinal tract, reducing early post-meal blood sugar spikes while continuously clearing systemic glucose through urinary pathways.
