Empagliflozin
Empagliflozin is a highly selective sodium-glucose co-transporter 2 (SGLT2) inhibitor that acts independently of insulin pathways. It works directly in the proximal renal tubules of the kidneys, blocking the SGLT2 transporter responsible for filtering glucose back into the bloodstream. By lowering the renal threshold for glucose, it forces the excretion of excess glucose via the urine (glucuresis). This action reduces systemic blood glucose levels, unloads osmotic pressure to assist in blood pressure management, and offers validated cardiorenal protective benefits.
