Ipratropium Bromide
Ipratropium bromide is a classic, short-acting anticholinergic (parasympatholytic) bronchodilator designed to provide rapid respiratory relief, particularly in vagally mediated airway constriction. It functions as a competitive antagonist of acetylcholine across central muscarinic receptors, targeting the M₃ receptor subtypes located on bronchial smooth muscle tissues. By blocking these M₃ receptors, it prevents acetylcholine from stimulating the intracellular guanylyl cyclase system, which halts the synthesis of cyclic guanosine monophosphate (cGMP). This target blockade completely stops acetylcholine-induced calcium influx, causing immediate relaxation of the bronchial smooth muscles. This process physically widens constricted respiratory passages, reduces baseline mucus secretion, and keeps the pulmonary channels systemically open and stable during acute asthmatic or chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) flare-ups.
