Ketoconazole
Ketoconazole is a classic synthetic imidazole antifungal agent. It functions by highly selectively inhibiting the fungal cytochrome P450 enzyme lanosterol 14-alpha-demethylase. This blocks the essential biochemical conversion of lanosterol into ergosterol, a vital component of the fungal cell membrane. The resulting depletion of ergosterol, combined with the toxic accumulation of methylated sterol precursors, disrupts membrane permeability and causes structural leakage. This halts fungal growth and provides effective topical relief against ringworm, tinea versicolor, and stubborn dandruff-inducing yeasts.
