Metformin HCl
Metformin hydrochloride is a foundational biguanide antihyperglycemic agent used as a first-line therapy for managing type 2 diabetes. It works primarily by decreasing hepatic gluconeogenesis (glucose production in the liver) and delaying intestinal glucose absorption. At the cellular level, it activates AMP-activated protein kinase (AMPK), which directly enhances insulin sensitivity in skeletal muscle and adipose tissues, promoting peripheral glucose uptake and utilization without stimulating insulin secretion from pancreatic beta-cells
