Omeprazole
Omeprazole is the classic, foundational proton pump inhibitor (PPI) consisting of a racemic mixture of its R- and S-enantiomers. It acts as a prodrug, remaining completely stable at neutral pH before becoming activated within the highly acidic secretory canaliculi of parietal cells. By permanently binding to the H+/K+-ATPase pump system, it cuts off the source of gastric acid production, significantly reducing total daily acid volumes to allow deep physiological restoration of inflamed upper gastrointestinal tissues.
